Being a PLAYBOY editor involves a certain amount of travel: from Chicago to New York to catch up on the latest Broadway personalities; from Chicago to almost anywhere to interview a politician—or a Playmate; from Chicago to Los Angeles for conferences with Editor-Publisher Hugh M. Hefner. And, as any seasoned air traveler knows, that involves a certain amount of waiting—hanging around departure lounges, airport cocktail bars, and, once in the plane, those strapped-in periods for takeoffs and landings. During those waits—and later in the pub lounge, if you've grabbed a flight that has one—casual conversation with fellow passengers sooner or later gets around to questions about one's occupation. "I'm an editor of PLAYBOY," you say, and you can almost see the other guy's eyes go TILT! JACKPOT! Sometimes one will offer to pay you to trade jobs. He's kidding, you suppose, but he seems oddly persistent. Finally, it comes out: "Those girls! Are they running around the office like that all the time? Do you get to meet all of them?"
Of course no single PLAYBOY editor gets to meet all the girls. (No married one, either, if you want to be technical.) Nor are there hot and cold running women thronging the 37 floors of the Playboy Building in Chicago. Sorry if that disappoints you, but look at it this way: We're not selfish.
