we'll real: you your rights: You are entitled to enjoy all the charm, beauty and
sex appeal that is the essence of the PLAYBOY cover girl. Nothing you say or do
will be held against you. The story began more than 30 years ago with a conviction
that there was a need for a new men's magazine. To be successful, it needed an
arresting cover. A meager budget put severe restrictions on the execution. Fancy
four-color graphics were out. PLAYBOY's Art Director Arthur Paul observed that
there were no black or white covers on the magazine racks, so the first issue
of PLAYBOY went onto the newsstands with a stark white background, simple red
and black lettering and a photograph of Marilyn Monroe, the epitome of cover girls.
The reader didn't have a chance; it was a clear case of entrapment.
That first cover lacked something, however. Editor-Publisher Hugh Hefner didn't
know when or if he'd be able to produce a second issue, and no date appeared on
the magazine that weft on sale in December 1953. But the verdict was returned
quickly. PLAYBOY had won overwhelming approval and the second issue carried a
january 1954 date.
Graphics and printing techniques have grown more sophisticated over the years,
but one thing hasn't changed: a dedication to innovative design. This book is
dedicated to one of nature's perfect designs: the PLAYBOY cover girl. With such
remarkable resources, it's not surprising that the magazine has become an institution.
Its trademark is one of the most recognizable in the world The ubiquitous rabbit
appears somewhere. in some form, on every cover. He has shared center stage with
such notables as Barbra Streisand, Javne Mansfield, Dolly Parton, Goldie Hawn,
Raquel Welch and Farrah Fawcett and, at times, has starred all by himself. A Trivial
Pursuit question asks: Who was the first male to appear on the cover of PLAYBOY
magazine? The answer is Peter Sellers, doing a convincing impression of Rudolph
Valentino, on the April 1964 issue. We didn't include Sellers-or Burt Reynolds
or Steve Martin-in this collection, but we have selected some of the best reasons
